Tools and Resources for Math and Biology Workshop

Page history last edited by John A Pelesko 15 years, 6 months ago

Resources and Tools listing.  Please not that this is not a comprenensive listing of tools to use for the workshop or in your scholarship/research.

Please treat this page a "work in  progress" so we can amass a great set of tools for fusing math and biology.

From SCALE-IT workshop.  June, 2009 http://bioquest.org/scaleit This set of tools is long and quite robust.  The major focus of the tools is on bioinformatics.  However, there are other links and sources for other computational needs.  The cases built from this workshop deal with HIV, protein strucure, enzyme function, and others.  Click on the link and the click on "Resources" under RELATED LINKS on the top, right hand side of the Scaleit Workshop-home page.

From NESCent- 2008  http://www.nescent.org/eog/ This workshop produced a fantastic case study and a listing of tools and items for doing cladistics, phylogeny, and systematics.  The NESCENT web page has many tools, ideas, and curriculum helpers under the above link to their Education and Outreach page.

Fro GIS data reading, from ESRI.  A free GIS reader, very effective for viewing GIS-referenced data.  Not very powerful for computation or for data manipulation.

http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcreader/index.html  Follow the instructions at the web site.  ESRI is highly reputable company with many colleges using their free software package in classes and scholarship.  For Linux, Windows, Solaris, but NOT for MACs.

Location for the GIS-referecned data collected by the federal government.  Much data here:  www.geodata.gov
